Hi folks nice to meet you all
I picked up an ashbory last night and am very happy with it- unfortunatley when I came down this morning (I left it on the kitchen table) the g string had broken, I changed the string was tuning it up and lo and behold - snap
I am down to my last g string here i am leaving it at e below g for a while is this the beast way, to tune up to pitch gradually?
Any help would be much appreciated

In my experience the friction between stringwindings on the tunerpost is a major cause of string breakage. The windings continue to stretch and become thinner when you're tuning up, so the rub against eachother all the time.
This can be solved by pre-stretching the string very well before installing, and tying the knot further up the string, so you won't need as much windings.
Using talcpowder on the string before winding it should also help.

All'n all, the G string is no doubt the most vulnarable part of the Ashbory: we all break one from time to time. I suggest you buy your spare G-string per meter from Mike Tavener (also a user on this board), so you won't end up with dozens of E, A, and D strings!

Good luck,
Xrix.

Good advice. Some other tricks are to tie the string and leave some extra in the bridge past the knot... ...sometimes if a string goes you can then just untie the not and tie a new one and you're good to go.

Pre-stretching the strings is ALWAYS a good idea, regardless of the string.

Happy Ashborying,

Try this.
Shrink-wrap - that tubular stuff that you heat shrink around cable joints.
You need 3/4" - 1" sections.
Slide onto the string, tie the knot, slide the shrink-wrap up to the knot, fit the string(making sure that the shrink-wrap stays flush against the knot.
The idea is that the shrink-wrap stops the the tuner post cutting into the string.
It's been about 6 weeks and it's been in and out of the case lots, all strings still intact.
Radio Shack sell packs of pre-cut, assorted size shrink-wrap for under $3.
They also sell it in Blue and Red!
