My Ashbory Bass was just delivered. Opened the box, unzipped the bag and........... the first thing I see is a broken D string, it's in two pieces. What a downer. Not a very good First Impression.
Don't give up on the Bass, there is a lot of fun to be had...once you decide to move on from the silicone strings. I simply can't figure out why a new string would break in the box, unless it was under tension from whomever shipped it. The unfortunate thing about silicone strings is that their health and welfare can be affected by the tiniest nick, embedded air bubble, or inconsistent diameter. Vibration, temperature changes and/or a spontaneous breakdown of a string's elastomeric properties are all contributors to a failure. Often, those failure mechanisms are out of your control. You do have an option to try some strings that are very tolerant to environmental extremes, and whose mechanical/chemical properties are MUCH less fragile. You do know where I'm going with this...don't you?
