Guild Ashbory Pickup Question
« on: October 08, 2003, 10:06:07 PM »

Hi Guys,
Just got a 1995 Guild Ashbory. Everything seems to work but the volume of the 2 low strings is much louder than the volume on the 2 high strings. If I tap the pickup it sounds equally loud on all strings, it's just when playing that there is a large difference in volumes.

Is this normal, due to the different string weights, or is the pickup possibly faulty?

I have never had one of these before so I don't know what it is supposed to be like, and same goes for the guy I bought it from. Would greatly apprecaite if someone could tell me if this is normal.

Thanks!!

Unfortuantely, I'll guess it's the pickup

Sounds like a bad bridge/pickup to me. Doesn't mean it is, but if I had to wager...

Here's what I went through to get my Guild fixed in 1996:

These days, a replacement upgrade pickup is available from Ashworth Electronics for around $100, see this page for more info (under "Q: My Guild Asbory bass has a bad pickup"):

Guild Ashbory Pickup Question

I encouraged the same problem. Inside the transducer are in fact 2 piezo, pressure sensitive elements. Normaly these transducers are sticked against the wood of the bridge, or the resonance room of an acoustic intrument such as a guitar. Not in the case of an Ashbury. Here are the Transducers sticked down on foam, inside a tiny little resonance room inside the bridge. Not the contact is responsible for the sound, but the pressure of the air inside the hermetic closed enclosure. We tryed to repair the problem. Due to the tiny format, and the fact that first of all, you have to open the glued en closed air chamber, this is a mission impossible. After the operation, the result was much better, but not satisfying. So we ordered a new one!
