How often to replace unbroken strings?
« on: April 25, 2004, 01:19:04 PM »

My newly bought second-hand Ashbory was made in 2000, and, I imagine, has had no string changes since new ( => lacks G string, naturally!, have ordered replacement from Mike).

I have this week bought a replacement set of strings (hmm, £20), but am wondering whether it is worth putting them on, as I realise that strings do not need replacing for tonal reasons in the way that regular guitar stings do.

There is a reference somewhere on these forums to strings lasting up to 10 years, and another to strings possibly becoming a little brittle over time.

So I'd be interested to know how often people replace unbroken strings, and is there a noticeable tonal difference?  If my set are 4 year's old, is it time for a change, or should I save my new set in case of breakages?

I'd hang on to the new strings until the old ones break, Tom. Even then if there's enough length to re-knot I'd put the broken one back on.  I've bought a couple of older Ashborys and the strings were ok as far as I was concerned, and still are. They do get thinner with time - hardly surprising as they're constantly in tension and a good part of it ends up around the machine head post.
Thanks for the order!
