Did you give it a name?
« on: May 13, 2004, 08:01:27 AM »

Hi,

Weird as I am, I belive if you don't give a nice name to your instrument you don't really love it. So, I called my Ash "Little one". Not very inventive but it really fits. :)

How about you?

Well, I haven't given my Ashbory a name, however a few of the guys in the band call it "ukulele bass."  Not very flattering, I admit!

Naming instruments

The only instrument I've ever named is a Carlo Robelli Korean made 8 string bass (octave pairs) with a sparkle silver finish, and it's called simply "Sparkle".

Sparkle is a decent bass, but it hasn't seen much attention since I picked up that USA Hamer 8 string Chaparrel.

I thought the most loved instruments were supposed to get names, but my Martin solidbody bass guitar, the Ashborys, the G&Ls, all have no name. Just 'Sparkle'.

Well I call it "rubber bass"...

But a guitar player I play with calls it chair-leg-bass for some reason... :)

 :o

Hehe. Now that you mention it, it does look a bit like a antique furniture leg. :D

On topic... I have names for all my basses. Ones that didn't get names in one year of ownership were sold or swapped for a more lovable instruments. So, my first bass is a Yamaha RBX200, and i call it "Nada" - it's a Croatian name and it means "Hope". Then there is "Mali - the Little one". And the new kid in town is the one I call "Sha-ka". It's a jazz bass copy with unknown origin.

I got Shaka few weeks ago - swapped for my neck-thru active Johnson pro series (had no name, so had to go). Here are some pics:
http://www.angelfire.com/folk/danko/shaka.htm

If anyone knows who made Sha-ka and where, please let me know.
  Thanks!

Don't worry, mine is now known as "The Radish" after sax player Alan Barnes referred to it as an "atomic radish".

I don't give any of my basses real names, I just refer to them with a short name, such as 'BTB' for my Ibanez BTB 405... or '4 string' for my Yamaha (my other electric basses are all fivers...)

One guitarist keeps calling my Ashbory the 'rubber bass'. Repeating to him only the strings are (silicon)rubber doesn't seem to help, so I might as well live with it  :P ...
I sometimes call it 'little one'...
