String lubricant test
« on: October 20, 2004, 09:52:44 AM »

Hi guys

I use to play my ordinary bass with GHS Fast Fret, so im somehow used to that oily feeling on my strings. Im gonna start testing pure corn oil as lubricant for the ashbory strings, as it was suggested in this forum altogether with coconut and cottonseed oils. Those seem to be non-abrasive oils when used on silicone. I will keep informing you all about any degradation on sound, touch feel or physical integrity of the strings. Have in mind the corn oil im using is 100% pure, extracted from the corn pressing it only 1 time under cold temperature (AKA not-refined high quality natural oil)

Ill be here back ASAP with any news about this experiment!

3 days of testing and the sound remains the same, unaltered, if so a little more defined, but mostly due to the slippery surface of the strings allowing better intonation and finger sliding

Seems like there has been no degradation on the strings, but I guess its soon to make assumptions...

11th day

Here I am, back again...

This is the 11th day of the test, and still no degradation on sound   or string material... I'm a happier man, hope this will last! 8)

A little point: The corn oil on the silicone strings seems to last much less than the GHS Fast Fret oil on standard bass metal strings, but... Who cares? It lasts enough to play continuously during 1 hour, and thats OK for me, not to mention corn oil is waaaay cheaper than GHS Fast Fret , in fact I can buy several corn oil litres for the price of 1 GHS Fast Fret :D

I use corn STARCH, not corn OIL. Makes slides very smooth.
