floppy E string
« on: October 23, 2004, 10:35:25 PM »

I just got a new Fender Ashbory from the Musicians Friend Catalog. I had a Guild model briefly in 1990 and had been missing it since.

I must say the sound and tuners are much improved. But on the model I recieved, the low A and E strings seem really floppy. the seem to buzz on the fretboard and dont produce nearly as loud a sound as the D and G. I don't think it is the pickup, as I can feel and hear that they are not as vibrant when I play it unplugged.

Anyone had this experience or have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Zak

My Ashbory is a DeArmond I've had for 3 years or so, which I guess is identical to the Fender except for the logo. I noticed the floppy, buzzy e-string problem when I picked it up after not playing it for awhile. Making sure the string winds down to the bottom of the post seems to help a little. When I actually took the bass out on a gig, I found that with the volume up and playing lightly I didn't notice the problem. Try turning up a bit and playing a little softer. I think this produces a nicer tone, too!
