String gauges in O Ring material....
« on: January 02, 2003, 12:38:11 PM »

Has anyone got any information on the various properties of O-ring material for use on the Ashbory?

I'm looking to restring mine to a "Sub-Contrabass Cello" tuning ( C G D A ) and obviously that'll need a custom set of strings.

I'm starting to trawl the net for the information, but any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers.

There's a guy reporting good results tuning B-E-A-D.

Have you tried to tune the current strings as you'd like? The Ashbory strings should be more forgiving in regards to variance from standard tension compared to metal bass strings.

As far as the material for your own set, I'd recommend trying Silicone Rubber O-Rings or O Ring cord. I haven't a clue on the gages.

Please report back with your experiences.

There's some technical information on string properties in the US Ashbory Bass patent which may be of use. There's a link from this site - thanks Brock. The replacement G cord which I bought, and know to work, has this specification - "Silicone rubber cord, 50 degree shore translucent". 50 degree, by reference to the patent, seems to be a measure of hardness, so you could do worse than seek out rubber cord to that specification.

For the curious, here's the Ashbory Patent:

As to the strings, there's also a small amount of insight at:
http://www.ashelec.demon.co.uk/ashbory/uk.htm

The old blueish Guild strings are superior to the current DeArmond ones... ...durability is about the same, but the sound and feel are better. The bright side is that the new strings aren't awful and they are available.

Overall I prefer the DeArmond Ashbory basses to the Guilds, but the Guild strings are definitely prefered. It's a shame they aren't available.
