New (to me) Ashbory
« on: February 22, 2005, 06:49:23 PM »

Hi all -
I have been playing electric Bass and Upright for quite a while and recently decided to buy an Asbory. I play Upright Bass and Lapsteel in a trio with Ukulele, Guitar, Harminca, and Pennywhistle playing Pacifif Swing and Blues from the 30's and 40's. We are going to do a short tour of Hawaii this Summer and I didn't want to lug my Upright on the plane.
Anyway I remembered seein an Ashbory in a local shop a few tear ago and happened to drop by yesterday and there it was still hanging on the wall. It had three strings (broken G of course) and the shop owner had a few sets of extras on hand but said he had not had much interest. So I offrered $150.00 and got it with the extra string sets!
Nice fat tone that should fit right in with the trio. I was suprised just how easy it is to play. I am now devising a mic stand mount for a folding tripod boom stand so I can play in my familiar position.
I was looking at an Electric upright but the cast was just too much for a nice one that actually had good tone.

Bill,

Glad to have you aboard.  Thanks for including the picture -- you look like a happy group of people!

If you've perused the site, you've probably seen Ted Partin's article called "Ashbory Upright Conversion" ( http://www.largesound.com/ashboryarticle/mod/stand/0001/ ).  If not, perhaps it will help you get started in getting your Ashbory mounted to a mic stand.  There's also Kevin Moreland's article called "The DeArmond Ashbory Bass Player's Stand" ( http://www.largesound.com/ashboryarticle/mod/stand/0002/ ), however it's a bit more involved.  If you come up with any new insights, be sure to let us know!

Thanks,

You massively scored! They paid you to leave with that Ashbory!

Mike has links to the two articles about stands here at LargeSound.com, but if you come up with something else, please let me know so I can add it to the resources.

Also, you might find the User's Guide of interest:

Happy Ashborying!

Hey Brock -
Thought you might like to see a few pics of my Ashbory stand up solution.
I made a replacement back cover from a 1/4" thich birch ply paddleball
paddle and inserted threaded T-nuts to receive the threaded knobs that hold
the 1/2" dowel in place. Also notice the deep countersinks on the screw holes
used to attach the back plate - so I can use the original screws.
I have it off of the Bass so I can paint it all black, but I will send more pics of
it on the Bass if you want. It is a blast to be able to play the Ashbory in my
familiar upright position!

I'd appreciate the final pictures with the Ashbory. I need to make some additions to the resources so let me know where I can get at more pics.

Thanks for sending that info along.
