Fretless intonation - better description of problem :)
« on: June 14, 2005, 08:17:42 AM »

I find myself barreing a lot, as in preparing for the next note. This doesn't seem to suit the idiosyncratic tuning of the Ashbo fretboard.

Is this a technique issue? Is barreing a no-no, or am I just not doing it properly (yet)?

Hello.

I wouldn't say that barring is totally out, it's just harder to keep it in tune. This is partly due to the fretless neck as any slight angle will mean that the notes are not exactly a fourth apart. This is then made worse by the scale which means even a slight angle leads to a big change in pitch.

The trick is to make barres as straight as possible, although eben then you might need to adjust a bit as the nature of the strings/scale length can sometimes mean that the "fret" will be in a slightly different position on each string.

Hope that helps,
Alun
