building an ashbory bass
« on: November 22, 2005, 08:47:43 PM »

My search for this topic came up empty, so.....Has anyone tried building an ashbory-style bass or know of anyone who has? I've noticed that the store section sells all the parts which might be needed to do so, including the tuners, the bridge/piezo pickup assembly, the preamp with knobs, the nut, and of course the strings...just need to build the body. Are there any other parts that I would need to assemble such a bass? Many thanks.

Check out the Articles on this site: there are 1 or 2 acoustic Ashbory experiments documented there..
I also remember some dutch guy building his own Ashbory, but I don't remember what the site was...

It seems you've got all the parts summed up. Would be cool to see how such a project would turn out! :D

I made an ashbory myself some years ago...

See some pics here:

And a rehearsal recording (awful quality, but the bass can be heard.

Yes, it's low. I tuned the strings to B E A D, because the upper strings broke everytime I went to a gig.

Here you can find a video (74 mb) and at 12 minutes I play the Ashbory in a song called "Dr. Hop". (k-oz at winston)

Good luck, contact me through the site if you need some info.

With a small knowledge of instrument building or wood working and some tools, yes you can build one too.
All you need is some wood and a some screws and the rest you can get from Large Sound. I'm incredibly happy with the one I made. I made mine out of scrap wood I had lying around, the design is similar to a fretless 6 string bass I built a while ago. I just finished it tonight. :) Oh yeah I forgot to mention this is a 19" scale with no markers, don't ask why other than I really went improv in the build process.

Somebody posted a link to this Ebay sale of a homemade Ashbory style bass on the TalkBass forum so I thought I'd post it here as you may be interested in taking a look at it.

Check out the link below for larger pics.

Sander-I love your little ashbory-it's even smaller than the original. What kind of pickup did you use for yours, and does it have any controls, electronics whatsoever....the body is so small it doesn't look like there'd be any room for anything. And I love your electric upright-I'm actually in the planning stages for building one just like it and refer back to your site often.
Dirk-Your ashbory looks awesome too! I started yesterday on my little ashbory, but planning a much smaller body, just enough to house the electronics. Have you had any problems with string breakage because of the longer scale? I'm still at the point where I can still change the plans for a longer scale if I want.
By the way, if you guys don't know about it already...you should check out mimf.com-the musical instrument makers forum. That's my main luthiery site where I post my instruments. You really should post your little ashbories there-the mimf guys would flip over your instruments, especially since they're pretty uncommon! And Sander, there's a section there for bowed instruments, where you could post your upright-you could really motivate some people with your work.

I'll post my ashbory as soon as I finish it. Thanks for your inputs. :?

Hey,

I just found out through a search engine there is a company called 'Earnest Instruments' who make an 'Electric Bass Uke' called 'Stretch' using Ashbory parts. Check out the link and pic.
