Ashbory mp3s
« on: January 12, 2003, 11:33:24 PM »

I haven't heard an Ashbory since I recorded one in a studio back in 1988!  I remember thinking it was fantastic and from everything I have read, the electronics are even better now.

I'm very interested in purchasing one, but would like to hear again what they sound like to see if it would fit into what I'm doing musically.  Does anyone out there have any mp3s posted on a website or available to email?

Also, I can't find much info about how well they stay in tune once the new strings stabilize.  Any information about this would be very helpful.

Many thanks,

JH in New York

The mpeg movie on this site at the 3rd or 4th page of the tour! And if you really want to become enthousiastic, find or download Lovetown of Peter Gabriel. (played by Tony Levin). This recording kicks @ss! (if you can't find the recording, please email me at nzh3@-@yahoo.com (and remove the double @- ). This recording is not present at one of his CD's, it was written and recorded for some movies' soundtrack....

You can also listen to my sound sample of my home-built ashbory in progress, but I think it's not representative for an Ashbory (yet). The bridge has to be replaced (and I have to learn to play this thing, I'm a double bass player you know, and the scale is....well.....different  ....).

This sample contains some of the first notes I've played on my silicone-stringed mini-bass! The bass is in BETA-stadium....but recorded directly thru DI (without any additional EQ):

As mentioned, it's by no means optimal, but it gives some idea. Look at the way it's recorded (crappy Crate B40 through the air and picked up by a Sony S70 digital camera's built in mic) and it's quite impressive that it sounds as good as it does, all things considered. On my todo list for this site is to add some decent MP3 files. I have the MPEG kinda buried right now, but I hope to have some MP3 files more upfront in the future.

Wow, that's coming along. The biggest difference I hear is the lows sound more hollow. It's not as deep sounding but a kinda dig that too, it adds a bit of a wah element to the sound.

What are you using for the pickup/bridge?

Well, the sound is more hollow because the bridge is made of wood. I don't like it yet, because the strings are not very tightly fitted in the bridge and there is some resonation, too....but it's a nice starting point.... (and a cheap solution for an ashbory)....I use a simple piezo-transducer and no pre-amp or EQ. I have a pre-amp (which I use for my double bass) which is extremely useful for piezo-transducers. Perhaps I can create an Ashbory sound with it (don't forget, the real Ashbory has active EQ, quite a difference!). How many dB's of bass boost does the Ash provide?

And to be on topic: if you've never heard an Ashbory, listen to Lovetown! You'll be enthousiastic at once! (but Tony is using an octaver, he's cheating :)).

FYI... I have recorded with the ashbory and you can find some mp3's on my Band's site mp3.com/after_hours  (some of these may still be in the process of being verified so try later if not available...)

Dave,

I just stened to both MP3s. "Southbound Trippin'" is really beautiful and your solo was wonderful; just about mistook the Ash' for an upright. You get a really sound out of it, of course, your tasteful dexterity doesn't hurt either. "What You Did" was also quite intriguing, but I found it hard to hear the bass line as my computer speakers are old Labtecs and just can't do the material justice. My loss. Many thanks for sharing that.

For those who haven't noticed, the example sound page from the Ashbory tour now has been replaced with a new one using a much improved sound file (MP3) featuring Brother Bob.

http://www.largesound.com/ashborytour/sound/

He's using the same sorry Crate B40 amp but we're not recording with a consumer digital camera this time.

It's nice to have replaced that lame old MPEG of me playing.

Here's the changelog with a little more detail:

Tony Levin ... if i'm not mistaken he also played bass with King Crimson for some time and used a rubber bass a lot.  Man, KC is jsut one endless source for interesting instruments.  Trey, the bass player they had untill a few days ago has been known to pick up a rubber bass every now and then when they play live.

Recently found out Tony Levin (my guru) probably does not own an Ashbory anymore....it got burnt together with a lot of his basses.

Perhaps he bought himself a new one...but I'm not sure:

From the original accompanying text

The example MPEG with audio will give you an idea of the sound and size of the Ashbory. I'm not playing anything in particular (or at all!), just making noises for example purposes. The clicking towards the beginning is from me hitting the strings down on to the board, which I do with bass guitars too. Like with a bass guitar, the Ashbory is easily played without doing that, which I also do in the clip.

» Hear and see the Ashbory Bass (MPEG, 344k)

For your size reference, I'm 6 foot tall. For your sound reference, here's the recording setup used:

    DeArmond Ashbory
    ...into...
Crate B40 40 watt solid state practice amp set pretty flat
...through the air and picked up by...
Sony DSC-S70 digital camera in low res MPEG mode.

In otherwords, I'm using a consumer digital camera's built-in room mic about 6 feet away from a crappy practice amp! No direct out, etc...
