Anyone here refinished an instrument in natural wood?
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:36:50 AM »

Hello all,
I'm new here.  I've got back into bass playing after a 25 year absence.  My current project is a 5 string tuned in 5ths (yes, Bach Cello Suites....).  I am considering an Ashbory for old-school playing (trad jazz) but I don't like the finishes.  I like wood.  So can anyone tell me what to expect if I stripped an Ashbory?  I checked out Agathis wood samples, they look like a very straight maple or boxwood.  But of course with a painted instrument you never know, you may have a really cool figured piece of wood.  Is the body/beck all one contiguous piece?  Any idea on stains? or oil finishes?  If anyone has stripped an Ashbory and has pictures that would be helpful.  Any advice or warnings equally appreciated.
Thanks & Cheers all,
Tosh

Never done it myself...
I do know the Ashbory is (supposed to be) made of 1 piece of Agathis. Agathis is nothing special (it's used mostly on beginner-level basses) but for the Ashbory that doesn't really matter for the sound... I doubt you would find something worth seeing when you strip it...
But you could sand it down, and when you don't like the wood you could always refinish it in a colour you do like :-D.

Is the body/beck all one contiguous piece?

Should be one piece. That's the claim from when they were reissued in 1999 and I doubt things have changed. If they have, it isn't noticable though the solid finishes.

If anyone has stripped an Ashbory and has pictures that would be helpful.  Any advice or warnings equally appreciated.

Not to my knowledge. If you do it, send pictures!

Here's a poor picture of a pre-Guild Ashbory with a wood finish (or so it appears):

That may be a one-of-a-kind.
