Detuning: How low do you go?
« on: December 27, 2006, 05:23:39 AM »

I've been reading different posts here on the forum regarding detuning to reduce the risk of string breakage when the Ashbory is in the case.  I have been detuning my G string down to D and the D string down to A for storage.  I have not been detuning the A and E strings because their tension appears to be quite low.  How low is low enough when detuning for storage, transport, etc?

I don't have a measurement, but I usually go 2 or 3 generous turns if it goes in the case. When I have it in the living room on the wall hanger I keep it at pitch.

I tuned mine down about 3-4 turns and the g string broke about 6 inches from the bridge while sitting in the gig bag.Seems to be enuff left to use again. The string was only a week or so old. Leave it lots looser now.......tuning is cheap

I tune it to B E A D. Used to do it to prevent broken strings, but now I keep it tuned that way...

The Rubber bass has a killer bass sound when tuned to B.

How long have you been doing this?
Does keeping your Ashbory tuned to B - E - A - D prevent string breakage?

What a cool idea. I'm going to buy another Ashbory to keep tuned this way. Then I can do a lot of my old 5-string stuff with it.

Thanks,

Probably not, but it would let you duplicate a lotm of stuff they do on 5-string basses.

I have never broken a string on my Ashbory, yet. And I never detune it. I think putting it in and out of the gig bag may contribute to the problem. I got a hard-shell case made for mine. You can e-mail carlthilman@yahoo.com and he will make you a superb fitted case for a very reasonable price. It's more than worth the money.
