Colored strings?
« on: May 21, 2007, 11:51:37 PM »

Are colored strings available anywhere, or is there a way to dye them?  I was wondering all along, but then I saw that picture of that blue ric shaped one with blue strings, anyone know how that was done?   :?

I (or rather my daughter) dyed them with fabric dye. Had to boil 'em for 10 minutes. She used Dylon multipurpose dye.

The silicone is stable up to about 200 deg C so it doesn't seem to affect its physical properties.

Excellent, thanks.  I'm also going to try a sharpie on a broken string, just to see how it does.  All black strings would be great.  :)

Roadtoad Music www.roadtoadmusic.com sell Black polyurethane stings which they call 'Pahoehoe Strings'. I have some on my Ashbory and the intonation is improved and you don't need to use talc. Roadtoad also sell red Nylon strings but I don't know if they are suitable for Ashbory...I suspect not. I should point out that I have no connection with Roadtoad Music other than being a past customer.

My Ashbory Bass at the top - strung with Roadtoad Black Pahoehoe Strings.

FYI my Ashbory fits perfectly in the Steinberger case below it.

Which string sizes did you purchase? Was it one of the standard/low tension/long scale sets or a custom set?

Keith, not sure who 'Pabs' is as I've sent a couple sets to the UK, but I didn't start doing the low tension set until I did my 18.01" concert uke bodied 'Tadpole' bass at the end of April. The low tension uses a softer E and A and benefits from using talcum powder. 90% of my strings out there are the 'Standard' medium tension set which does not require the powder and was optimized for 20" scale. I'm told that they work fine on an Ashbory. I haven't seen an Ashbory in person, so I rely on what others have told me, but I check out the Largesound forum since the Ashbory has become a second application for my poly strings.

The red nylon 'weedwacker' stuff was from the first incarnation of uke basses and is an octave higher (like lowest 4 guitar strings).

Owen,

Thanks for the response. This is the Keith that visited you with ToeBone to check out your ukes last February.
