Aluminum speakers for amps?
« on: May 30, 2007, 06:47:30 AM »

I'm looking for an amp for my new Ashbory, and am not too familiar with some of the products out there.
I'm considering a Hartke A35 or A70 kickback style with an aluminum cone speaker, but I'm wondering if that type of speaker will be counterproductive to the sound inherent for an Ashbory.
Behringer also has amps with paper-cone speakers and aluminum-cone speakers. These seem to be competitively priced.
Roland also has a 60-watt cube with different effects, but I'm not sure I'll need them with the Ashbory. (I don't have any other bass now, just a couple of regular electric guitars and a 65-watt Peavey studio 12" amp.)
Can anyone comment on the quality of Behringer and Hartke amps? Are they about comparable?
At the cheap end of the spectrum, I can get a refurb Rogue 90-watt (with paper cone speaker) 12" at Musician's Friend for under $100. The reviews I've read on the Rogues are not that great, with some people even saying to stay away from them.
I think I want a 10" or 12" speaker, kickback style, and a minimum of 35-90 watts of output, so I'll have a little bit more than a practice amp.

After reading older posts around the forum, I discovered Brock's endorsement of the Soundworks Bass headphone amplifier and probably will  get one for portable headphone use. Could its output be plugged into the effects loop return on an amp, bypassing the tone controls? Or could it be used as a preamp and plugged into something like Epiphone's 5-watt tube amp head? I think I've seen that head on sale at Musicians Friend for under $100.

I have used one of the Hartke kickbacks for regular basses - sounds good in general, and there was a lot more high end clarity available than I'm used to in a bass amp.  On the down side, I hadn't obtained an Ashbory yet.  I had picked it out for a friend that had just gotten a 6 string and was looking for a practice amp.  For all I know the aluminum cone is overkill on a bass that doesn't have a tremendous amount of highs to begin with - but I doubt it would be bad.

Hi ausbun,

Hey, if you want to know how your Ashbory will sound through different types of amps then take it to the store with you and plug it in for a test drive.  I have done this to see how my Ashbory would sound through different effects before I bought them.  Here are some benefits to doing this.

1 - You will be able to choose the gear that YOU like and that YOU think sounds best.

2 - You will instantaneously and automatically be cool to everyone who sees you with the Ashbory.

3 - You will be a vital part of keeping the Ashbory alive by introducing it to an uninformed crowd.

4 - You will have the opportunity to tell people about largesound.com.

Have fun!
