Ashbory arrived today!
« on: June 13, 2007, 02:25:03 AM »

After reading about the Ashbory and bidding on a few on eBay, I finally decided to spring for a new one from Large Sound. (The $25 savings on the bag-sewing error was the clincher.)

I'm amazed by the quality of the instrument and how easy it is to play. I was concerned that the unusual strings and fretless neck would make it more difficult to play than a fretted bass. Because of the short scale, I think it's easier. Playing it through a small regular guitar amp (with mediocre headphones) provided exceptional sounds. I'm ordering a Ampworks Bass for headphone practice.

I think every elementary and high school music room in the country should have one of these to teach bass guitar to students, seriously.

I have a couple of questions:

1. The serial number ends with 14007. Does this mean that 14,007 (or more) Ashborys have been sold?

2. I seems the G string took a lot of winding, and I still haven't got it tightened up to G. ( I think I stopped on E.) Should I wait a couple of days before tuning it up to G? I know that the strings will take a couple of weeks to stabilize after they're tightened up.

I've been happy with mine. A bit bulky, but not as bulky as the headphones I use with it I suppose.

Kelly and I both are pretty darn sure the first two digits of the serial number are a two digit year followed by a two digit month. From there, the numbers bounce around.

Here's some headstock backs. Check out the serial numbers:

It's pretty safe to say the last 4 digits aren't Ashbory production to date.

What I do is untie a knot on one end of the string, tie a knot further in, and then instad of cutting the extra string away I tuck it under the other string ends at the bridge end. If the G happens to break, sometimes there's enough left to save the string.

Nope. Tune it to pitch. Better still, take it off, stretch it, then put it back on as described above and tune to pitch.

Yup. They take a long time to break in but they also will sound fresh over a year later.

Enjoy the bass.
