Learning: Need some advice
« on: July 30, 2007, 03:53:47 AM »

I've been neglecting my Ashbory while I had a deck rebuilding project going on, but it's almost through. I'm not able to take lessons just yet, but I wanted to get some music and learn a few songs.

I've had a full sized fretted bass before, but I sold it because I wasn't playing much, didn't have anyone to play with, etc.

What I wanted to ask the forum is: Are there any particular songs that I can practice that sound good just with the bass?

 I've printed the tabs from Cheap Trick's 'I Want You To Want Me' tonight at work, thinking this might be a good one to learn. (Everybody knows and loves it and knows the words, and it looks pretty straightforward to play.)

I want to be able to pick up the Ash and plunk out a handful of recognizable songs with no accompaniment, just to be able to show people what a cool instrument it is.

I've also thought about some Stray Cats stuff. Didn't they have a standup bass?

Does anybody have any favorites? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Well, I would stick to bass-heavy bands for recognizability, but make sure the notes-per-second aren't too high.  The Police is good, Primus if your group is familiar, Rush might be bad though.  I don't know if Stray Cat Strut is recognizable much as  a bass part by itself without all the twangy goodness on top.  Late in the Evening? (Paul Simon, with Tony Levin goodness. )  Flashlight? I Want to Thank you for Lettin' me be Mice Elf...again?  {Parliment, and Sly&The Family Stone}

In a store - if it's not fretless, I usually try Elephant Talk (King Crimson) or Jerry was a Race Car Driver(Primus) because you get low & high register checked quickly, but I wouldn't try that on an Ashbo w/o a lot of practice.
