Bowing
« on: May 08, 2009, 02:54:38 AM »

A few years back Ethan B posted about bowing the Ashbory with your finger on dry strings. I couldn't get this to work but discovered by accident that it did work when I used a billiard player's talc called Silver Cup. This seems a bit coarser than baby talc. When lightly pulling my thumb up and down a string I got a bowing effect. The angle is important.

Obvious I need to go to my Suzuki method classes. I should also note that I have experimented with coating my strings. The last thing I put on was a few coats of Armorall. Don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.

That's cool!

The Slyde-rites are actually a finer powder than say baby powder, whereas you mention the "Silver Cup" is more coarse.

Interesting video. Thanks!

Brock,

I received some strings and slide rite from your store. (Thanks for the prompt service.) It can be used for bowing as well. I still haven't figured what works best specifically for bowing with all I have tried: arrowroot powder, Silver Cup, Armorall. I am still very far away from making bowing useable but here's a new video:

Gosh, I knew it was bad but not so bad that they'd list it as private. Fixed. Should be viewable now.

Art,

Thanks. I actually think someone with musical skill could do something with it. On further experimentation it seems if you coat the strings with the current formula of ArmorAll and use no talc you get more volume. The ArmorAll doesn't seem to have any negative effect on the string. You can just go back to talc or Slide-Rite for normal playing.

Kevin,

That's really cool. I like the way you flipped through the other technique-only sounds too, including the "Pulse Tap". Ashborys are so expressive, and good at changing, and responding, by how they are being played.
