Ashbory as a beginners bass?
« on: January 04, 2008, 08:53:15 AM »

Hi, there!

I played drums for a while (but never played a string instrument) before becoming a full-time sound-technician, now after years of non-instrument playing I would like to start with bass - because I´m pretty much on tour, I would like to start with an instrument I could always take with me and so I found the Ashbory.

I tried the Ash at an german distributor and I was very pleased by the handling (and even more pleased by the sound - I´m pretty much in all forms of african-arabian-asian ethnic-colored music  from indian ragas to System of a down  :-D and I believe the Ashbory would fit), but I´m still wondering if it would be easier for me to start with something like the fretted Fernandes Nomad bass. Unfortunately this bass isn´t reachable for trying and comparing it to the Ash.

Any meanings or comments? I´m thankful for every hint.

Regards, Guenther

Fretted bass guitar is easier in that you don't have to judge as much where you are on the neck. The metal strings also tune up faster and easier. Add in the scale being short (not Ashbory short, but not 34 inch either) and the Fernandez is an easier instrument to learn on for sure.

Will it sound great? Nope. Would you want to play it if you had a regular bass guitar handy? Probably not. The Ashbory Bass is the travel sized bass people will play even when full size instruments are around.

I guess it depends on the tradeoff you're looking for, ease of play vs. sound. If ease of play (and learning) is the priority, get the Fernandez.

Hi, Brock!

Thanks for your helpful comment.
Sound vs. ease of play - that´s what I´ve expected...
Sound is much more important to me and I´m not searching a pure "training-bass".

Hello again!

After a second visit at the german distributor and a very pleased feeling with the ashbory, added by some not very pleased reports of Nomad users, I decided to buy the Ash.
I´m looking forward to have a lot of fun: the Ashbory (in blue) will arrive in the middle of next week and I reserved about two hours a day for learning.
A friend of mine, a professional fretless player, promised to help me through, so I hope to make some efforts.

As a (small) trainings combo I wan´t to use a selfbuilded cabinet with a Emminence Deltalite 2510 (first series with the great phase plug) in 35 litres tuned to 40 hertz, fired by a 19"-USB-Soundcard with build-in bass-preamp (Swissonic Studio D), INSERT INTO `smf2_messages` (`id_msg`, `id_topic`, `id_board`, `poster_time`, `id_member`, `id_msg_modified`, `subject`, `poster_name`, `poster_email`, `poster_ip`, `smileys_enabled`, `modified_time`, `modified_name`, `body`, `icon`)ed five-band fully parametric eq with additional high- and low-pass (Behringer) and a gated compressor (dbx 266XL). The soundcard is followed by a 250-rms-watts digital amp module build by Bang+Olufsen (ICEpower). Sounds very linear up to nearby 2kHz, above there are some resonances of the driver, but with the help of the eq that should be ok. I´ve build the similar combo half a year ago for a friend, and he´s still very pleased.
Meanings about that? Tuner and metronome are available, I´ve bought some extra strings and powder - am I ready?

Opinions will vary, but I find the Ashbory enjoys sterile sounding amps most. From your description, that amp should work quite well.

Sounds like you're ready to me!

Hi, Brock!

To be honest: I choosed this combination of amp and cabinet because of this forums advice...
I picked a lot of helpful informations out of it, especially out of your posts.
I tried to verify the picked informations by visiting the distributor and they approved.
Thanks a lot!

My ashbory was my first bass, after having played guitar for several years I bought one, and I now have 6 other basses too - but I still love my ash.
