Chalk ball instead of talc?
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:06:55 PM »

Can't play it yet but just got an Ashbory. Instead of talc could a chalk ball used for climbing do?
At the moment I'm just using a violin stand for the Ashbory.

WN,

Chalk ball: I have no idea how it would work. If you're convinced it won't damage the instrument or strings, you might give it a try.

Violin stand: I'll have to take a look at those. Is it working well for you? How's the end of the body working with the stand? Also, what brand of stand are you using? I have a guitar stand that works, but it is kinda big. The violin stands I just looked at seemed more reasonably sized.

I have taken a couple of pictures of the violin stand. It is made by the Taiwan company Kikutani Music Co Ltd and I think costs about £12. Most other violin stands are not suitable but the holder at the bottom holds the Ashbory and the neck holder is just wide enough.
If anyone can tell me how to forward pictures I'll show the stand in use.

The violin stand I was referring to is the one shown in the picture of the Japanese string company from an earlier post.

The Violin Stand not to get for your Ashbory is the Hercules TravLite violin / viola stand. The neck holder is far too narrow for the Ashbory, which is a shame because otherwise it is a really nice stand.

I suppose you've tried it by now, but I'm guessing the chalk is to increase friction, which is the opposite of what you want. Spme use powdered rosin for the same sort of thing - and I know from experience that's annoying to have on oyur hands when oyu play n Ashbory.  Unless the chalk is more like talc than I think, and climbers use it to absorb sweat.

Another source for the little bags of unscented talc is dive shops - I've bought them there.

And bowling alley 'pro shops', if that hasn't already been mentioned (been off this board for a while).

And while mentioning places to get talc pouches, billiards stores (which is where I got my first one), billiard halls, and on the Internet, Large Sound Commerce, all carry SLYDE-RITES or something similar. Out of curiosity I bought a non-SLYDE-RITE pouch from a pool hall locally some years back and it worked just fine.
