Broken Gs again
« Reply #1 on: March 31, 2003, 07:42:26 PM »

See my previous postings regarding replacements - still have a couple of metres and will reorder soon. email me for a price, but I can't guarantee it will be with you (and stretched up to pitch!) by Thursday.

Any feedback from others I've supplied out there?

See my reply under "'Unhooking' the E striing" for a different approach to this problem.

I'm thinking that you should consider Pahoehoes.  Different sound, yes - breakage problems, no.  When I'm gigging sometimes reliabilty is king.

Since this G string issue is very troubling, why doesn't Fender try to solve the problem?  In my opinion, the instrument is not gig-ready when the string could snap at any moment.  That's why I prefer the more reliable Poho's.

It is a pitty indeed! I find the G string generally is the best sounding string, with the best tension.

Try a scoobidoo

Or a vinyl laundry line to get your emergency string.

I really tried hard to make the Ashbory work 'as-is' - I haven't even moved the strap pegs on mine.  However, since I have been playing out more lately, I really wanted to have a fretless bass available to me when I wanted it.  Having replacement 'G' string by the foot is nice, but it doesn't really solve the basic reliability issue - I would have to second the idea that the pahoehoe stings are the way to go in a gig situation.  Even detuning the D and G strings all the time is a real pain in the neck.

Last night's gig I played a couple of songs with the Ashbory.  When I got to the gig, I set up my rig and got everything else ready.  When I went to tune the Ashbory, I grabbed it out of my case, and the A string had slipped off.  This is much better than random breakage.  I was able to stretch the string, land the string back where it was on the peg, and got it tuned up again in under 2 minutes.  The down side is that I have a black strap, a black Ashbory, and now black strings.  It's like it was invisible.  Maybe I should have gotten the 'Rasta' colors.
