acoustic sound from the ashbory
« on: October 13, 2008, 03:42:48 AM »

Guitar Center is now selling a Planet Waves tuner (#CT-02) for $10 US. It has a piezo built into a clamp, and the tuner has a 1/4" out. I clamped it to the Ashbory headstock, sent it through my recording stuff, and came up with this recording:

This is just the tuner clamped to the instrument, there is no signal from the bass electronics at all.

That is really cool. Very nice playing as well.

I wouldn't have expected it to sound that nice. You get extra string noise, which is no surprise (and has a redeeming quality of its own, I think).

The part that wasn't a surprise is that the low end is in there. As you might image, between the scale, the electronics, and the overall oddity of the instrument, people sometimes wonder if the bass sound is really in the instrument or created by the electronics. Of course, it is in the instrument, which is easily determined if one puts their ear up to the neck while playing.

Do you mind if I put a copy of that MP3 up in the resources? It is the best answer possible for a "Does the Ashbory really make sound like that, or is it just electronics that create that sound?" type question.

It's fine with me if you use it. I may even have others that sound better as time goes on.

Sweet. Wonderful clip. I'll probably have it folded into the FAQs this weekend.

I was just about to suggest you do that after hearing the brilliant recording/playing. Well done Bopster

I'm tempted to get one of these tuners and try it plugged into my amp.

I wonder how it will sound compared to the Ashbory's pick up in a gig situation ?

Ok so I bought this tuner and have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong but the sound is very very damped and quiet and it's hard to get almost anything properly audible through my usb audio interface (from tuner to xlr-input).

Any hints what I might be doing wrong? I attached the tuner to the headstok and it also keeps slipping out constantly.

I haven't tried it personally, by my hunch is you'd get the best result by going:
Ashbory -> Tuner clamp -> Tuner line out -> Bass amp -> Line out -> USB whatever.
