Building an Ashbory - having a ground issue
« on: December 12, 2009, 07:41:04 PM »

Hello.  I'm building an Ashbory, or at least i am building a 19" scale bass using ashbory strings and preamp.  I've got it all wired up, and i think i grounded everything well (see pic below), but i'm experiencing a weird hum.  When the volume is all the way up everything is fine.  When i turn the volume down even just a tad i get the hum.  Touching the volume or tone controls takes away the hum.  Again, at full volume there is no hum.  Anyone have a clue what's going on here?

Thanks for your time,
-Scott

I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't.

I can tell you, however, that I've never experienced what you're describing before. I have no idea how many Ashborys I've played, but it's in the hundreds!

If you figure it out, let us know.

P.S.: Where are you grounded to, and is that an active/passive toggle?

Brock, I did figure it out.  The case of the pots are not grounded on the preamp.  I soldered a wire from the case of each pot to the ground screw that you can see in the picture.  The hum is all gone!

The switch is simply a power switch.  The Ashbory used a stereo phone jack for power switching (power on when a cable is plugged in).  The only jack i had that would work with my design was mono, so i needed to add a switch.
