Just my luck
« on: July 23, 2009, 12:47:58 PM »

I finally got my Ashbory in the mail yesterday. So very excited. I followed all of the advice that everybody on this site so generously provided. I pre stretched my strings. I put shrink wrap on my strings. I used my slide rite.

And before I could get that G string to pitch it busted at the bridge.

First day.

Today, I'm ordering the pahoehoe strings.

Sorry to hear about the string.

Someone needs to come up with an eco-friendly use for broken silicone "D" and "G" strings...that's for sure.  How about a contest?

It's a shame that Fender's chemistry has not improved over the years.  Thankfully, we have a very good alternative.  When you order your Pahoehoes, be sure to specify the newly terminated (crimped) strings that work with the Ashbory.  Owen Holt's new sets work GREAT!  Please let us know what your impression is after you string up.

Yes, will do. I am very glad to see that alternative out there.

On another note: has anybody considered just not using a G string? I snapped mine yesterday, and while I do have spare strings, I just haven't gotten around to restringing it. I'm finding that since the Ash goes up a full 2 octaves on the fretboard, it's not crucial to have a G string unless you intend on playing pretty high on it.

At any rate, I finally have my Ashbory after weeks of saving up and combing through every last post here and that is good enough until I get my Pahoehoes.

Sorry this comes so late, I'm a total newcomer here, but I had a similar experience with my brand new Ashbory a couple of weeks ago - the G string was across the room on the floor the morning of the day after I took delivery and strung it up.

It had NOT broken though, as far as I could tell... the knot at the bridge end had slipped itself and the string was still fine when I re-tied it and re-tensioned it. It's been fine since.

I know you've probably got the other strings now, but if you didn't find two pieces of your G string, it could still be perfectly okay.

I ordered my Ashbory Bass friday Oct 24/09. I hope I don't have any string issues. I'll get back to ya, when it arrives.

My Ashbory Bass was just delivered. Opened the box, unzipped the bag and........... the first thing I see is a broken D string, it's in two pieces. What a downer. Not a very good First Impression.

Don't give up on the Bass, there is a lot of fun to be had...once you decide to move on from the silicone strings.  I simply can't figure out why a new string would break in the box, unless it was under tension from whomever shipped it.

The unfortunate thing about silicone strings is that their health and welfare can be affected by the tiniest nick, embedded air bubble, or inconsistent diameter.  Vibration, temperature changes and/or a spontaneous breakdown of a string's elastomeric properties are all contributors to a failure.  Often, those failure mechanisms are out of your control.

You do have an option to try some strings that are very tolerant to environmental extremes, and whose mechanical/chemical properties are MUCH less fragile.  You do know where I'm going with this...don't you? ;D

Devtodd1/Mark,

You have email. Sorry for the late response. Kelly was out sick yesterday. She has a replacement string out to you, and if you're still not happy we'll take the bass back.

The first couple weeks are the hardest. The strings aren't stabilized and everything is new and different.
