Dragonfly Stethoscope headphones
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:31:08 AM »

I just got one of these in the mail: http://www.truenorthmusicproductions.com/DragonflyPage_Order.html

It's not the most comfortable thing to wear, but it sure amplifies the true sound of the Ashbory nicely.  The first time I had a listen, I was amazed at how closely the Ashbory sounds like an upright bass.  I actually prefer the sound that I hear through these headphones over any settings that I've tried "hooked up" to the amp.

Another advantage, no drain on the batteries.

That's a neat headphone alternative I've never seen before.

Makes sense that it would work. As I've noted to people over the years, if one puts their ear up to the back of the neck while an Ashbory string is vibrating, they hear Ashbory. The sound is in the strings.

The Dragonfly looks far more comfortable than playing with an ear up to the back of the Ashbory's neck!

Thanks for sharing that.

I was practicing in the passenger seat on a long drive home today, and I got quite a few looks.  I must have been quite the sight playing this strange looking instrument with a stethoscope hanging out of my ears.  But how I love the ability to practice bass now just about anywhere.

I did that back in the 1990's but with my old Guild Ashbory and a crappy Fender headphone amp while flying commercial. Fun, fun, fun.

There aren't too many instruments that you can play in a vehicle and not disturb the other passengers.

I wonder if you could put the earpieces up against a microphone to record the sound, and if so, what it would be like in comparison to the normal plugged in sound.

Interesting thought!  One downside is that the headphones amplify everything including finger/string noise, the strings hitting the fretboard, etc.  This is great for practicing, because you can really work on eliminating some of that but may not be so hot to have amplified.

The FAQ has a track with the Ashbory being recorded from a piezo mounted on the headstock:

I can see how the added noise could be desirable depending on what one is trying trying to accomplish.

Ok, one problem with the stethoscope amp is that the sensors which are made of metal.  It's the same cold metal that the doctor presses to your chest for a checkup.  The metal left little circles on the plastic trap door on the back of the bass :(  Oh well, more character I guess.
