Ok, so one thing that's amazing about the short 18 inch scale on these Ashborys is that you can reach a fifth on the same string very easily.  This type of reach is very difficult on a long scale bass. 

The other nice thing is that one finger for each fret is a simple accomplishment.  On a long scale this can be accomplished further up the fretboard, but on the lower part it's quite a stretch.
