Out of idle curiosity (of which I have an unlimited supply), a search under “Ashbory” on Google results in 1,320 hits. I’ve gone through most of these and found some interesting ones.
1. Shades of Shearing
http://www.livewirelistings.co.uk/features/weymouthjazzfestival/2002/review/reviews/shadesofshearing.htmA 4 piece British jazz ensemble out of Devon. “Interesting bass solos from Bob Martin on the visually odd and highly portable Ashbory bass, complete with a fretless neck and rubber strings produced a lovely warm sound.”
2. Watt’s Thud Staffs
www.hootpage.com/hoot_gallery-thudstaffs.html Mike Watt, bassist (California)
Mike has quite the collection of axes among which is the Ashbory. He also recorded an LP with the Guild Ashbory: “Bootstrappers" LP. (Interesting guy.)
3. Todd Connelly
http://www.toddconnelly.comLike Watt, Connelly is a professional bassist with a load of axes. He owns an Ashbory, but doesn’t say whether or not he’s recorded with it.
3. Pål Andreas Hansen
http://home.online.no/~aslgr/pal_andreas_hansen.htmInteresting shot of a little kid with an Ashbory.
4. Reviews
http://uweb.superlink.net/~rayash/reviews.htmRay Ashley’s music review page in which he discusses the CD, “Trey Gunn Band Live at The Knitting Factory September 14, 2000.” He states that Joe Mendelsonn “played an Ashbory rubber bass guitar, tapping on the fingerboard for a huge sound that shook the room” on the track, “The Glove.”
5. Free-Improv Case Studies: Bret Hart's Duets Series by Jerry Kranitz
http://www.aural-innovations.com/issues/issue18/brethar2.htmlUses an Ashbory on the entire album. ITIDS#20: Fred Hall/Bret Hart Vol III. I emailed Kranitz who directed me to Hart. I ordered the album from Hart this week out of curiosity (and the fact that it was only $8 and had a nice cover design).
