Fender abandoning the Ashbory?
« on: March 24, 2004, 02:02:01 AM »

My local dealer was looking into pricing for me, and advised that the Ashbory is no longer in the Canadian catalog.

He is checking further with the distributor...

Luckily, there are still quite a few on e-bay.

The other Fender dealer in town confirmed that the Ashbory is no longer in their computers, or in the Canadian catalogue.

One ray of hope- neither store seemed enthusiastic about investigating further with the Canadian distributor. Perhaps this just reflects laziness at the dealer level or poor communications at the distributor...

Fender abandoning the Ashbory?
« Reply #2 on: March 25, 2004, 09:13:08 PM »

Did the dealers look in the Strings Parts and Accessories section, because that's where Fender have chosen to list it in the British and American catalogue. Well kept secret or what. Catalogue Nos. are on my website below.

Ashbory not in the new Canadian catalogue...
« Reply #3 on: April 15, 2004, 04:55:11 AM »

Just picked up the new Fender "magazine", which seems to serve as the current dealer catalogue in Canada. No Ashbory, even in the accessory pages.

However, it still shows in the accessories section at Fender.com, and post-De Armond product continues to show up at eBay, etc. What a bizarre company Fender is...

Anyway, I'm not going to worry about it. I just placed my order with Brock (and a companion order with Mike Taverner for a length of G string material!).

It's not a secret, but Fender can be difficult to follow at times. Persistence and care there can be an asset as well. :)  The Ashbory gets bounced around the catalog like some TV shows in the USA do on their schedules. Sometimes this is given as the reason for the end for shows because people don't know where to tune in, or can't set up a viewing behavior. Will it kill the Ashbory? Likely not, as a dealer should be able to call Fender and ask if they can get an Ashbory. If they were reordering them (like a person watching the same show every week on Tuesday at 7pm) it's no big deal, as the part numbers have remained the same, even as they migrated from being "DeArmond" to "by Fender" (as mentioned at http://www.largesound.com/ashboryarticle/general/fenderart/ ) which of course caused a different problem, since some people would insist on a "DeArmond" or a "by Fender" and there'd be no way to know for sure what was arriving until opening the box.

Fender lists Ashbory Basses online:
http://www.fender.com/products/show.php?partno=0350100306

(with an old out-of-date DeArmond picture)

Part numbers are there, and have been there all along.  I'll fold them into the FAQ here next revision.
