Ashbory: Technical Topics / Battery exploded
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:44:26 AM »
I was wondering why my Ashbo wasn't working... turns out the battery had blown up: the bottom of it was open with bits spilling out all over the place.

Any idea what might cause such a thing? Simply a dodgy battery or something more sinister? I do get crackles when I play a string harder.

Andrew.

Ashbory: Technical Topics / E string fart
« on: November 23, 2007, 09:13:57 AM »
When I play my E string firmly, I get a slightly distorted raspy noise. I'm not overdriving anything (vol on 2, as is amp) and the battery is new.

Any ideas?

Ashbory: General Topics / That upright stand project thing - AGAIN
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:29:39 PM »
Right, so after much confusion and advice and surfing, I sussed what the contributor in the Articles section was on about.

Here's my attempt, which hopefully is a reasonable illustration:

Points to note:

1. The mic holder plate wotsit was from Maplin http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=31247&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=MIC%20HOLDER&doy=1m11.

2. The straplocks are Schaller. Was very pleased to find I could place them in such a way that I could use the existing screw hole in the backplate for one of the buttons, and not need to screw into virgin Agathis.

3. A major prob was that I couldn't tighten the mic holder into the necessary straight position, so the thing was loose and swung like a pendulum do. I had to put a couple of rubber plumbing washers on the thread so I could tighten it up in the right position (i.e. the top hole of the 3 where it attaches to the pivotty wobbly bit).

4.The other big prob was the angle at which the thing needed to be fixed. The weight of the bass meant it kept sinking to vertical, so I wedged a little electrical connector thing into the pivotty wobbly bit. There MUST be a more reliable and elegant way of doing this, suggestions welcomed.

Hopefully the pics explain this better than my words do.

None of this makes me play any better.

Ashbory: Technical Topics / String thicknesses
« on: October 24, 2007, 12:50:24 PM »
I've just replaced my E and A strings for the 1st time, from an open packet that's been knocking about the gig bag for years.

Both these strings appear to be exactly the same "gauge". Is that right, or have I ended up with 2 x E strings or something?

Aaaaah, I have a much better idea of it now, thanks. Altho investigations on the web suggest these 3-mic adaptors are thin on the ground (to the tune of 0 in the UK). Ooh, just found http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=31247&doy=24m5&C=SO&U=strat15.

Also, I guess you could screw a straplock wotsit into the back of the Ashbo body so it could clip into the 3rd mic hole and dispense with the webbing.

I.e. http://www.largesound.com/ashboryarticle/mod/stand/0001/

I don't understand the instructions. What is this "3 mic adapter"? Which bit is it that "will become the top of the mount"?

Can anyone supply pics of a finished item to help me grasp what's going on?

I am presently experimenting with this idea of tying gut frets onto my Ashbory bass.

Have you come to any conclusions on this trial yet? How high up the neck can you play and maintain (fairly) correct intonation?

Ashbory: General Topics / Re: Ashbo and RSI prevention

Good lord.

Wish I'd had that in 1992 when I had to give up "proper" bass and a life of fame and superstardom :(

Recently I've been experimenting with www.powerballs.com and it seems to stop the pain of playing Big Bass getting out of control, even to the extent of me buying a 5 string recently (and hence ignoring Ashbo, sadly).

I just need Mr Fender Dearmond to build his 5 string fretted Ashbo.

Ashbory: Technical Topics / Quiet D string
« on: February 20, 2007, 10:22:42 AM »
My D is quieter than all the others. I'm sure it used to be fine. What could cause it? Imminent string failure? Imminent battery failure? Something clogged up with talc?

I don't gig regularly, but also have never had a string break and spoil it all. I had a string break mid rehearsal once, but with a quick reknot and stretch is was up and running again in a couple of minutes. I think string breaks would be much more of a gig-threatening issue for a guitarist with a floating trem system.

As one could argue it's not that wise to do "important" gigs without a back-up, in order to walk or ride there, you might want to buy TWO Ashbories...

Ashbory: General Topics / It's coming back around again
« on: January 09, 2007, 01:53:36 PM »
Not been playing the Ashbo much of late, mostly due to http://powerballs.com/ keeping the RSI under enough control to play my full size bass. The current big bass is not suitable for playing live, so I got very excited by the possibility of buying a new big bass... but after playing several can't find one as nice to play as mine.

So I have to stick with the Ashbo. Which is unfortunate in Gear terms, but probably better in Bass terms, as I reck Ashbory stops me getting out of control with complex things I can't play properly and people can't hear properly.

Perhaps I should buy a back-up Ashbo of a different colour.

...
Long live the Ashbory, thick necks and slim guitars!

The idea of a thick neck scares me, so I'd like to test your theory - which basses have thickest necks? (n.b. I'm conscious of this not being an Ashbory enough question for the forum...)

Ashbory: Technical Topics / Re: Do strings break only in the case?
« on: November 27, 2006, 12:14:21 PM »
My last two breakages happened overnight while the Ashbo was out of its case lying on the spare bed.

It would be nice if Mr Fendearmond made some effort to remedy the string failure issue.
